How important is the drying stage in steam sterilization?
In steam sterilization, drying is not just the final step – it's essential for maintaining a sterile state after the cycle.
💡 Why is the drying stage important?
After the sterilization process is complete, if the instruments still have excess moisture:
❌This can lead to re-contamination with microorganisms from the external environment.
❌ It can affect the integrity of the sterile packaging.
❌It can cause material deformation, indicator ink smudging, or packaging damage.
⚙️ Drying mechanism in steam sterilization
Currently, systems use many different drying methods:
🔹 Vacuum drying

– Reduces pressure to promote water evaporation

– Highly effective for equipment with complex structures and multi-layered packaging
🔹 Vacuum pulse drying

– Alternating suction and intake allows moisture to escape gradually
– Reduces material stress, optimized for complex loads

🔹 Combined drying with clean air intake (HEPA)
