Why is it necessary to categorize sterilization methods?

Why can't a single sterilization method be applied to all types of instruments?
In reality, each sterilization method has different technical limitations, safety requirements, and operating costs. Therefore, classifying sterilization methods is a mandatory principle in the management and operation of CSSD systems.
So why is it necessary to classify sterilization methods?
  • - Material properties: Not all medical instruments can withstand high temperatures. -> Materials such as plastics, rubber, and electrical/electronic equipment (especially endoscopic instruments) need to be sterilized using low-temperature sterilization methods to avoid damage and reduce lifespan.
  • - User safety:
  • + EO sterilization is toxic and requires strict control of residual gases.
  • + Plasma + H₂O₂ sterilization is less toxic and safer for users and the environment.
  • - Operating time and costs
  • + Steam: fast cycle - low cost
  • + EO: longer processing time and more cost-effective than other low-temperature sterilization technologies, suitable for instruments that do not require rapid turnaround
  • + H₂O₂: high operating cost, fast sterilization time, suitable for instruments that need to be used urgently
-> Properly classifying sterilization methods helps optimize aseptic efficiency, protect instruments, and ensure patient safety. Depending on the characteristics of the instruments, the level of safety, and operating conditions, healthcare facilities currently apply many different sterilization methods.

-> Below are 5 sterilization methods commonly used in hospitals. These include:
Steam sterilization

Ethylene Oxide (EO) sterilization

Low-temperature plasma sterilization

Dry autoclaving and Liquid chemical sterilization
